TATE MODERNEXHIBITIONHYUNDAI COMMISSION: SUPERFLEXONE TWO THREE SWING!UNTIL 2 APRIL 2018

Playfully subversive artists SUPERFLEXhave filled Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall with swings
An orange line of swings weaves through the Turbine Hall. It then crosses the gallery and emerges in the landscape to the south of the building.
Each swing has been designed for three people by Danish artists’ collective SUPERFLEX. Swinging with two other people has greater potential than swinging alone and One Two Three Swing! invites us to realise this potential together. Swinging as three, our collective energy resists gravity and challenges the laws of nature.
Swing into action on the count of three – One Two Three Swing!
Danish artists’ collective SUPERFLEX is best known for its playfully subversive installations and films. Founded in 1993 by Danish artists Bjørnstjerne Christiansen, Jakob Fenger and Rasmus Nielsen, SUPERFLEX has gained international recognition for collaborative projects and solo exhibitions around the world.
This is the third annual Hyundai Commission, a series of site-specific works created for the Turbine Hall by renowned international artists, as part of the partnership between Tate and Hyundai Motor.

Guy Bourdin at Somerset House

Think you know what fashion photography is about? Look again! The wonderful zany work of 70s French Vogue photographer Guy Bourdin was on show at Somerset House from November 2014 until March 2015, and showcased his extraordinary ability to tell a story. The exhibition was full of Bourdin's work throughout his career, including paintings, photographs, magazine layouts, and some strange films focusing on the way in which models pose.

A particular favourite was 'Britain by Cadillac', a series of photographs for a Charles Jourdan advertising campaign in 1979. Bourdin dispensed with the use of a model and employed instead a pair of mannequin legs, cut off just below the knee. She is only a hint of a woman, and yet in each situation in which Bourdin placed her she becomes a complete character within a story, told around many iconic British landmarks such as a Brighton seafront, an English rose garden, a taxi rank, and Battersea Power Station.

Please come up to the Art Department to see Miss Eng's Guy Bourdin book if you are interested in learning more about it!

We are marking our centenary year in Hillcrest Road, our ‘One Hundred Years of Faith’, in several ways, one of them being our ‘A Stitch in Time’ project.  This project, to upholster the wooden kneelers in the Chapel, is gathering momentum.

Miss Eng, Art Department, is coordinating the project and representatives from the groups involved met again on Tuesday, 3rd March, to discuss proposed designs and make a preliminary start on creating cartoons of motifs inspired by the symbols, patterns and colours of St Augustine’s Priory and our Catholic faith.

Our aim is to involve everyone in this project – from pupils in the Nursery right up to the Sixth Form, their families and staff - and produce items which will be of use and beauty for the years to come.  Embroidery takes a long time so we will be working on this project over the course of a year.

For inspiration, we are looking at the designs and symbols already present all around the school which may help us to formulate some of the designs for the kneelers.  Some of the pictures with this article show you a few of the symbols you may well walk past frequently and not notice!   You will also be familiar with the chairs embroidered by the nuns over one hundred years ago.

Our next meeting will be from 4.00 – 5.00 p.m. on Wednesday 22nd April in the Art Room.

Don’t be put off becoming involved by a lack of experience or expertise!  Don’t worry if you have never embroidered or don’t know your appliqué from your satin stitch – all those who are interested are welcome, tuition will be given!
Creativity is not the preserve of the minority – creativity is for everyone!

If you are interested in becoming involved in ‘A Stitch in Time’ please email Miss Eng at CEng@saintaugustinespriory.org

We look forward to hearing from you!
