Form III (Year 7)
Colour & Artistic Movements
Students learn about colour theory, mixing secondary and tertiary colours, tints and shades. They develop an understanding of harmonious, complementary, cold and warm colours and apply this learning to the study of Impressionism, and Pointillism. They are then introduced to screen-printing and the work of Patrick Caulfield and finally develop their photography skills, documenting the beautiful school grounds, capturing the effects of light on colour and then taking inspiration from the contemporary practice of the artist Chuck Close and his use of the grid method to inform their final painting outcome. |
Culture and Pattern: Shadow Puppetry
Students develop an awareness of art from another culture and its relationship with religion and spirituality. They explore the rich colour and pattern in Buddhist Mandalas, depictions of Hindu Gods and Indonesian Shadow Puppetry. They learn about Creation Myths and use storyboarding to develop a visual illustration of the creation of their own puppet. The study of insects and macro photography informs students design process and application of colour and pattern. Consideration of scale and proportion is given to the drawing of their puppet from their initial designs, which they then refine with detailed pattern, colour and collage. They consolidate their understanding of colour theory, using the cross-hatching technique to blend with colouring pencils before assembling and animating their puppet using shadow puppetry. |
Digital Animation
Students learn how to design characters and create a narrative. They explore the work of surrealistic artist Hannah Hoch and contemporary film maker Tim Burton and produce a piece of work that explores the main theme of Alice in Wonderland. The students learn how to use a storyboard to plan ideas, as well as record live action. The stop frame animation is composed using digital photography and collage and once complete, it is edited in imovie. The outcomes of these films have been incredibly exciting |
