Upper I
Summer Term
Low Relief Sculpture
Students begin the term with an observational drawing of mackeral purchased from the local fish mongers. Students were invited to look closely at line and colour, exploring the surface texture and the rich palette that describes the form.
The class then went on to study Picasso's low relief sculptures and produced their own response to these highly personal and witty ceramic sculptures.
Lent Term
Recycled Textiles
Students explored the work of Ghanaian artist El Anatsui, a sculptor who produces large scale installations composed from recycled metal. Materials such as bottle tops are then bound together with wire and hung in large rooms. His work draws upon the connections between consumption, waste, and the environment.
In response to his work, students collected recycled materials and found objects and wove them together on a loom board. A textile weaving was created that included a rich variation of colours and materials. The finished weavings were then hung collectively, in a large wall tapestry.
Michaelmas Term
Portraiture and Cubism
Students will learn and understand the basic principles of drawing from observations. Students will learn how to produce an observational drawing of the face that takes into account the features and proportions. Students will then look to the work of Picasso and the early works of the Cubists to develop their portraits using a range of photo-montage and Photoshop techniques. Students will begin to understand the value of looking at the work of artists to help inspire their own artistic work.
Outcomes to this project include a portrait drawing in pencil, a mono-print, a photomontage inspired collage, and a finished Photoshop work.
