Upper V (Year 11)
Personal Project from Given Starting Point
The starting point for this project is usually the exam brief from the previous year. The reason for this is that it allows students to gain insight into the examination process, viewing the exam paper and selecting their pathway forward from the information that is provided in the paper and also from their teacher and their own investigations. In a sense this project performs as a mock-exam, although the body of work produced contributes to the coursework submission. Students are expected to show greater independence, resourcefulness and enthusiasm whilst demonstrating skills that they have learned throughout the course and employing them appropriately to their chosen direction. The selection of artists and visual research should be meaningful and chosen from a range of historical, contemporary and cultural sources. Students should prepare a body of work comprising of sketchbook and external larger pieces in 2D, 3D or both. A mock timed exam in January offers students the insight into the sustained making of a final piece for this project; however unlike the true exam, students will have additional time to complete their outcome. |
Externally-set Project and Timed Examination
Edexcel set the theme for this aspect of their GCSE and students are given a period of 8-12 weeks to prepare a body of work in response. This culminates in the production of a final outcome/s that is produced in the timed aspect of the exam - 10 hours over 2 days - where students work in exam conditions producing their planned outcome/s. In this time, students are expected to work independently, drawing on their learning throughout the GCSE course and applying this to the creation of sophisticated outcomes that contain meaningful and mature themes. |
