Summer Holiday Postcard Competition!

29/9/2014

The Art Department ran a competition for Key Stage 3 students over the summer holiday break. Students were invited to make an original and handmade postcard that could then be posted back to the school in time for the new term.

A successful postcard should be well designed, creative and show a skillful useful of materials. The Art Department were pleased with some of the imaginative responses to the competition but we would like to congratulate the following 3 students in particular on their winning postcards; Bethany Pullen, Melay Sebehatu and Zoe Mills all in Lower 4 A.

Picture
Zoe Mills used the colour rendering technique successfully in this colourful parrot drawing.
Bethany Pullen used a combination of collage, felt pens and colouring pencils to create this atmospheric mountain landscape

Melay Sebehatu created a serene poolside scene using colouring pencils, which we felt was reminiscent of the artist David Hockney's work.

The art workshop providers, Artescape are working with architect Catja de Haas on a new exciting event! ‘A Giant Dolls House’ project will be on the wall of the TESTBED 1 gallery space in Battersea, between Wed 15th - Sat 18th October.

Artescape are sending invitations to schools across London and other networks, hopefully amassing 100’s of shoebox houses and St. Augustine's Priory hope to contribute towards the project by asking students to make shoe-box dolls houses before the event takes place. The doll’s house is an initiative of architect Catja de Haas who has developed an interest in dolls’ houses as a way to communicate ideas about the home and community.

The project highlights the importance of a home for all and therefore we are asking for a contribution of £1 from each participant for the housing charity Shelter, to be collected by Miss Grundon.

Please make your dolls house out of one or more shoe boxes and decorate as you wish! The deadline for the shoe-box dolls houses to be delivered to the art department is the 13th of October, to allow time to get them to the gallery space in Battersea. The opening of this installation to the public will be October 15th.

Participating students and their parents are welcome to attend the Big Draw event on the 18th of October at the TESTBED 1 space in Battersea, 10-12pm and 2-4pm to see their work displayed and to participate in the Artescape - Big Draw workshop. For more information about this opportunity, please speak to Miss Grundon in the Art Department, or contact jgrundon@saintaugustinespriory.org

The V&A's current free exhibition explores how objects have been used and adapted for social change and propoganda. Particularly recommended for UV students looking at 'Order and Disorder' as their theme. Younger artists please be aware that there is some mature content in some artwork so ask permission from parents before going. http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/exhibitions/disobedient-objects/

Well done to all students who took part in the drawing a day task over the summer holidays. Drawing on a daily basis helps to improve our observational drawing skills and our understanding of composition and scale. Here are a few photographs that demonstrate the excellent standard of drawing!
